Havah

I've said recently that writing Havah is the second hardest thing I've ever done. I wrote it with love, pain, joy and fear... and so many questions.

How does one comprehend death if one has no experience with it? Why would anyone living in perfection crave something expressly forbidden? Why would God accept the sacrifice of one brother and not another? What was the mark of Cain?

And it went on: How does a mother love a child who murders her other? How does a marriage survive the betrayal of perfection? How does a tale of death not become a tragedy?

Much as with Demon, I wrote Havah (the Hebrew name for “Eve”) to explore the story in a way that made sense to me. But unlike Demon, I left writing it with more questions than I began with. Eventually, I concluded that while some details may never be known, some truths remain the same:

* There can be no true morality without the option to choose wrong.
* Barring the tragedy of the fall, we would not know the triumph of redemption.

Join me for the story the way it might have gone.

Join me for the genesis of hope.

**

Leave a comment here or on a post in days to come with your e-mail address and I will enter you in a drawing for one of several things: a copy of Havah; a copy of Legend, in which archaeologist David Rohl explores the possible location of Eden's garden (fascinating to me in my research); or one of two previewed documentary DVDs (A&E and History Channel, I believe)--one on Adam and Eve, and another on Cain and Abel.* Specify which ones you're interested in and in the next couple weeks I'll notify the winners.

Also, if you write a review of Havah (or Demon, for that matter) on Amazon, B&N, Christianbook.com or another retail site, I will enter you twice. Just post a note or send me an e-mail with the link.

* I thought about making these giveaways a clearing house of resources I used in my research--some two thousand dollars' worth of books and DVDs--but somehow the Pentatuch as Narrative, field survival guides, and books on ancient basket weaving and plant propagation seemed a lot less sexy.

Hey Tosca! Include me in the drawing for Legeng and the DVDs, please.

I'm putting out the post for you. Also, I'm expecting to get a copy of Havah through, I think is it FIRST? I dunno, I'd have to check...

Wow. I would have jumped at Pentateuch as Narrative.

I'd love to be entered, Tosca. I'e always loved to fantasize about things like what must have gone through Eve's mind when she was no longer a rib but a human. LOL I can't wait to see where your imagination took it. :)

I want to know if the Ancient Basket Weaving book you aren't offering is Ancient Underwater Basket Weaving or just regular Ancient Basket Weaving because if it's Ancient Underwater Basket Weaving I would want you to reconsider its non-inclusion in the prize pool because I sure could use a book like that for the next time someone asks me "What did you study in college?", to which I would reply "Underwater Basket Weaving," and just as they were thinking "Yeah, never heard that one before" all snarky-like, I would produce the book and say, "See?"

Of course, I would have to carry the book everywhere because you never know when those opportunities are going to come up. Is it heavy?

But if it's just Ancient Terra Firma Basket Weaving I think I'd rather win the documentary DVD on Adam and Eve. Or maybe an office chair. Or a big-screen TV. You know...whatever you happen to have around the house.

I was excited to get to meet you in the halls at the conference, Tosca! I didn't have an email for you to send the picture we took when we met you so if you would like one, please let me know. I'd love to be entered into your drawing for Havah. I was surprised at all the questions you said you explored while writing it and would like to see how the story unfolds around them. Thanks.

Please enter me for both Havah and Legend. I recently read Demon. I have passed it on to my husband (who seldom reads) - he read the entire book, in about a week (short fo him) and we have had several long discussions about it. (Another first, -we seldom discuss books!!) It is now in the hands of my middle daughter. After her, my oldest, who I am most excited to have read it, as at times, I think she may be in the same situation as Clay with her beliefs. Oh, and funny story - we were singing in church a couple of weeks ago, something about being the clay - and my husband leaned over and commented - "Clay!! His name was Clay!! I just go it!" I almost laughed out loud. Anyhow, thanks for an awesome book, and I'm excited to get my hands on your next one.

Hi Tosca. I would be thrilled to win anything (but honestly Havah would rock my little skull argyle socks off! It was interesting reading the questions you came up with while writing Havah. Loving Demon, and I will definitely review it anywhere I can (my husband is next in line for it). Thanks again!

I would love to be entered into the drawing. This sounds like such an engaging way to spend some time; thinking about how it must have felt to be Eve. In having children, the sympathy for Eve is present. The moment that you give birth to another child, the relational dynamics change in the entire family. It is a churning soup in the soul to explore this topic, and I wish you much success as you continue in your vocational
success!

Cup o'joy
and a fresh taste of the bread of heaven...

If I'm not too late - I'd like to be entered to win Havah or Legend.

I found you just today through a FIRST WILD CARD gmail. Had no idea that there was such a fascinating sounding book about Eve already.

I did a post for an amateur writing contest and it was told from Eve's perspective and considered attempting to putting it in book form to see where it took me. Many of the questions you've posed on this post and subsequent posts are questions I have had too. Very interesting reading.

I've enjoyed browsing through your blog and will be back for more. And I plan on picking up Havah to read in the near future!

Tosca, I have heard such good things about your book already! Yeah!!

I will get it one way or another, as it is on my wish list, so I will eventually get reviews on the sites you were hoping for.

In the mean time, I can't wait to see your upcoming posts - your questions were very interesting!

Congratulations on your book! :)
